The holiday season is a time when custody and visitation issues tend to become more apparent. It is important to know your rights and responsibilities under your decree. If you are separated or have never been married, visitation issues can be confusing and often lead to arguments during a season when time with family is paramount. As such, having a court order in place can make things easier. Regardless, if you have children who are subject to visitation with a parent, there are a few things to remember. Always keep in mind that holidays for such children can be very stressful for them as well.

First, don't let the children know your concerns or become involved in your disputes. Your child loves both parents and should not have to ever be placed in a position of feeling the stress.

Second, Try to discuss matters involving visitation in a location where the child does not hear.

Lastly, don't allow family or friends to make disparaging comments about the other parent when the children are present. Let them enjoy their childhood and have good holiday memories, not be saddled with emotional scars of fighting and chaos.
